You buy it, you burn it, you use it to heat your home and to power your vehicles, but how much do you actually know about fuel?
For the average Brit, the answer would be not all that much. While the use of fuel is a necessary part of modern life, most people know surprisingly little about this incredibly important substance. So if you’re interested in learning a bit more about this vital part of your daily life, and then keep reading as we cover some of the more interesting, but lesser known facts about fuel of all types!
Amount of Fuel Needed to Reach the Moon in Apollo Missions
When it comes to travelling, few trips are more impressive than those taken by the Apollo astronauts throughout the late 1960s and early 1970s. These missions are the first – and only – manned flights to the moon.
The first successful manned flight to the moon was the Apollo 11 mission, which took place on 20th of July, 1969, and the final was the Apollo 17 mission, on the 7th of December, 1972. These missions are the furthest that humanity has ever ventured from their home, so it begs the question, how much fuel exactly did it require?
While modern rockets have much better fuel efficiency than did the rockets used for the Apollo missions, for now the only data available about manned trips to the moon come from these six missions. And those early Apollo missions required over a staggering 350 million litres of fuel in the forms of kerosene and liquid oxygen.
So the next time you’re unhappy about the cost of refuelling your vehicle, just remember that it’s probably at least a couple hundred thousand times cheaper than a trip to the moon!
How Much Fuel is Necessary to Power a Commercial Tanker
One of the largest vehicles that are operated by man is generally used to transport oil, and is known as a commercial oil tanker. These behemoths of the sea not only carry incredible amounts of fuel (up to several hundred thousand tonnes), but they burn a shockingly large amount as well.
Since these ships can vary in size massively, the amount of fuel that they use can also greatly vary. Small tankers can use as little as one tonne of fuel per hour, while the largest can use an amazing 16 tonnes of fuel hourly!
Which Country Uses the Most Fuel Annually?
Due to environmental reasons, many countries have greatly reduced their use of fossil fuels in recent years as regulations tighten up, but that doesn’t change the fact the most economies are still dependent on this important substance. Therefore, the world’s biggest economies tend to also be the largest burners of fuel.
This means that the world’s largest economy, the United States, also uses the largest amount of fuel annually. As the biggest user of fossil fuels, the USA burns 18.5 million barrels of oil per day, or 20% of all of the oil burned across the world daily. They are followed by China in second place.
How Much Heating Oil Does the Average UK Household Burn During Winter
While there are several variables that can cause this number to fluctuate greatly, such as an unseasonably warm or an unusually cold winter, the average amount of heating oil used each winter across the UK does stay about the same. And when all averaged out, most households in the UK consume around 2,000 litres of heating oil annually.
