Running a commercial company with a fleet of vehicles is a huge venture and can become expensive. From buying vehicles to training your staff, you may not have even considered the fuel costs involved. Every company looks to save money where they can, and saving on fuel is not only beneficial to company profits but also helps cut harmful emissions that contribute to global warming.
Of course, many commercial fleets still have to operate despite recent worries about climate change to ensure that food is delivered to supermarkets, waste is disposed of responsibly or construction projects still go ahead as planned. However, there are other ways of saving fuel, money and the environment by making active decisions to drive more efficiently, responsibly and economically. In this blog, we provide tips for driving a commercial vehicle more economically which could potentially save you hundreds of pounds each year.
Less braking and more momentum
It’ll come as no surprise that any starting and stopping of a vehicle uses fuel to do so. To begin with, try and stop any unnecessary braking. As well as minimising braking, try easing off the accelerator and maintain a continuous speed, which is better for your vehicle’s MPG (miles per gallon). Easing off the accelerator will become even easier when travelling downhill, as the natural momentum of the hill will carry you instead of your fuel. Similarly, use uphill sections as a way of braking to come to a rolling stop behind traffic instead of touching the brakes and using fuel.
Consider your route
As a commercial company, you may take the time to plan and research your route beforehand to know exactly where you’re heading. However, consider researching more into infamous traffic jam areas, popular roads, roadworks, accidents and whether the shortest route will be more or less economical depending on these factors.
As a commercial vehicle, you could be driving across the country, into big cities, small towns and along country roads. Attempt to avoid venturing into a city where you can, as a lot of stopping and starting can occur here. Narrower roads and tight corners will also hinder your journey, therefore holding up yourself and other cars around you, disenabling them from driving economically.
Before and after every journey, make sure you check your vehicle’s tyre pressures. Low pressures can increase rolling resistance and wastes fuel in the process. However, tyres at an optimum pressure will not only be safer but will improve fuel economy.
