With a summer of hot weather and a few heatwaves ahead of us, the last thing on most of our minds is our heating systems. However, the British summer is short, and before you know it it’ll be time to turn the heating on again. Once the cold weather hits, many people find their systems aren’t performing properly or have issues, which is why it’s worth looking after your heating now. Here are some things you can do during the summer months, which means you won’t need to worry once it gets colder.
Service your boiler
Many home or business owners don’t notice poor boiler performance until the winter months, so book your boiler servicing during the summer, which is often a quieter time. Boiler servicing includes all sorts of checks, including:
· Fault finding
· Ensuring your boiler is running efficiently
· Checking pipework
· Cleaning and servicing of your system
Some people also find that if they don’t run their boiler during the summer months, then when they switch it on for a cold day, it immediately seizes up and breaks down. If you’re going to be away all summer, set your timer to switch your boiler on for a few minutes a day. During the summer, you’ll still use your boiler for hot water, so if you notice your boiler is taking longer to heat it up, get the engineers in now, before the busy winter months.
Stock up on oil
During the winter months, lots of people will be running low on oil, so there will be a bigger demand. Towards the end of summer is an excellent time to get your heating oil delivered, as it’s easy to arrange, and you won’t have to wait long for it to show up. The same goes for commercial customers who use oil for generators or use more fuel in the winter months. Don’t leave it until the last minute.
Get some more insulation
If your home or workplace often feels chilly and draughty in winter, then it’s worth spending some time in the summer making a few improvements to make it energy efficient. For example, adding better insulation means that it’ll be easier to heat your home and you’ll have less heat loss, so you can use less fuel over time. It’s best to do these jobs during the summer months when the days are longer, and there’s less chance of bad weather slowing you down.
Summer is also a good time to check your roof, as missing tiles can mean draughts and damp. Bring in the professionals, or simply have a look from the ground, ensuring there are no gaps. Fixing these issues means your boiler won’t be working overtime trying to heat a draughty house.
